Should i take Accutane?
I’m a 16 year old male and I’m wondering if i should take Accutane or not. I have mild/moderate acne and have micro cystic bumps to the left/right side of my chin going up to my lips and 3-4 medium-sized pimples on the side of my face during a breakout. I’ve tried Pro-active and that only “managed” my acne. I’m currently on Minocycline(100mg twice daily) and Duac in the morning/ Differin at night. I absolutely hate acne and it can lower my self- confidence a lot. I am very grateful i have it mild, but I would really like to be clear. The treatment I’m on right now seems to be doing a pretty good job, but i still get breakouts. It seems like every weekend i get three more pimples before the next monday of school. I’m going into the derm. soon and I’m sure he’s going to suggest accutane.. because he mentioned it could be an option last time i saw him. I just don’t know what i should do, just out wait the acne throughout high school and wish it to go away? Or risk accutane?

For how long have you been in that antibiotic, Duac, and differin treatment?
You may want to wait a little longer, and stay on that treatment. Although taking antibiotics for a long time is not going to help since the bacteria becomes resistant.
Have you tried Rentin_A?
Retin A is a Treitnoin(related to Accutane which is an Isotretinoin), it’s like topical Accutane(high levels of vitamin A) for your skin. You could try that first before trying accutane. I certainly would, and I did, and it didn’t work. Now I’m on my fifth day of accutane, because I’ve tried absolutely everything and nothing worked.(Differin, done it, antibiotics, done them, Retin A, done that too, over the counter products, all of them).
I’m on my ”purging” period for accutane, so far I’ve had no problems. Well Good luck!

my friend had pretty bad acne and took accutane and her acne cleared up
ive heard though it can make you suicidal and your whole body is dry and starts to crack you have to watch out
and you cant drink at all …AT ALL. for 5 months its very serious
if you drink …it might be fatal because accutane somehow affects your liver and while your on it you have to go every month to get lab results.
i actually went to my derm today and she said my skin isnt that bad to use accutane but its a last resort and it would make my face really clear.
Accutane isn’t that “risky”, although it can have some unpleasant side effects and isn’t for everyone. If you do have some cystic acne, Accutane is the only therapy which can provide long-term relief of treatment-resistant acne. So, it’s something to definitely consider, especially if you don’t want to constantly treat your acne. It’s a personal decision, though.
You can always try Accutane and if you can’t tolerate the side effects, you can stop the therapy. It’s not something you have to stay on if you can’t tolerate the side effects — the side effects stop when you discontinue therapy. The side effects are manageable for nearly all patients, however. Have a thorough discussion with your physician and use this decision-tool from WebMD (below) to help you. Good luck!

If you have not seen improvements on other medications and your doctor is suggesting it, then yes. Accutane is NOT as scary as it sounds – believe me. But you must go for blood tests every month. It does increase lipid and other levels. That is why they make sure everything is normal before they allow you on it. Pre-accutane my cholesterol alone was 140, now it’s 176. It will elevate levels and will make you dry. If you’re scarring, I would definitely go on it. The very serious side affects are rare. Read up online about it, talk to your doctor, and make the best informed decision. You must have time for a monthly blood test and doctor visit. If you don’t; then don’t start it until you do.
