holes on my face from cystic acne. Will dermabrasion help?
I went to a medi spa last year and had laser tretaments done. These treatments didn’t do a thinkg for the pock marks. what a waste of money.
So being EXTREMELY depressed aboout my appearance and not dating because I am scared of rejection, I went to a plastic surgeon. He thinks dermabrasion may help. But he said it is hard to guess at what the results will be like. he said if I decide to do the dermabrasion, I should take 3 weeks, preferably 4 weeks, off from school/work, avoid sun, etc to allow my skin to heal properely.
I want to do it if there is a chance it will help, but I am so fed up with spending so much $$ on stuff, only to be let down. If I get this done, not only will it cost a lot of money to get it done, but the time off from work is going to cost me as well.

I would talk to a dermatologist. There are several techniques – there’s dermabrasion, microdermabrasion, all kinds of things. Get an opinion from a dermatologist about what you can expect and what’s best for you.
I don’t know if you’re a man or a woman, but one of the most attractive men I know has pock marks on his face from teenage acne, and he’s never had a problem getting dates. I can understand how you feel, but it’s possible it’s more bothersome to you than to anyone else.
Ask the dermatologist for photos of befores and afters. Good luck.
Depending on the number, type — hypertrophic(raised) versus atrophic (depressions) — and how widespread the scarring of the face is, you have several treatment options from what is called “acne surgery” to chemical peels to injection fillers to dermabrasion or additional laser treatments.
“Acne surgery” is where the scars are actually individually removed and skin is stitched back together. Of course, this isn’t a great option if you have a very large number of scars or if your scars are more scattered over your face and not the severe “ice-pick” scars.
If you do have isolated but severe “icepick” scars (where your skin is relatively good overall but you have a dozen to a few dozen well-defined scars), then you might also benefit from what are called “injection fillers”. I would recommend Restylane. This a long-term filler which not only fills in the “depressions” in your skin but also causes the skin the re-generate over time. (Other injection fillers have more temporary effects.)
If your scars are more like “stretch marks” (where the skin appears stretched out like a rubber band) rather than “ice-pick” scars, or if you just have a large number of shallow/superficial scars, then chemical peels, laser treatments, or dermabrasion probably are a better choice of treatment for you since the entire facial area might require treatment. (Laser treatments typically require multiple treatments — usually a series of three, once per month, for any degree of improvement — and results come over time, typically seen after 1/2 a year.)
The *last* thing you want to do is rely on a a “medi-spa” for treatment (even if run by a physician). Unless you actually see the physician, a medi-spa will provide you with whatever you are willing to spend money on — whether it will benefit you or not. Only have performed whatever a dermatologist or plastic surgeon specifically recommends for treatment.
You may want to visit a dermatologist for a 2nd opinion — dermabrasion can definitely be a valid treatment for acne scars, but due to the time required off from work, you may want to pursue injection fillers, two more laser treatments (*maybe* — get a professional recommendation), and microdermasion. Combination therapy is typically required for the best results. None of these would require any “downtime” or time off from work.
Over time, and with persistence, you can and will see results from the correct treatments from medical professionals and not salons or spas. Good luck!
